Acupuncture Study Trip – Japan – March 2025

In March, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to Japan to attend the annual Toyohari Association Acupuncture training in Tokyo. Toyohari is a unique and gentle style of acupuncture that uses incredibly fine silver and stainless needles. Having started learning this fascinating technique two years ago, I was thrilled to finally experience it first-hand from a diverse group of esteemed Japanese teachers.

Toyohari is all about listening to the body’s feedback, using palpation and pulse-taking to identify key patterns for treatment. The goal is to balance the meridians and support each patient’s essential vitality. The seminar in Tokyo brought together 80 practitioners from Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, all eager to hone their Toyohari skills.

One of the highlights was practicing with the gold Yanagishta Teishin, a contact needle that gently stimulates acupuncture points. This tool is especially effective for patients who are sensitive or needle-phobic. Among the Japanese teachers was Murakami Sensei, a remarkable practitioner in his eighties who, like many Toyohari experts, is blind. I was fortunate to receive a treatment from him at his clinic in Tokyo. Despite the language barrier, his impressive palpation skills and treatment left me feeling rejuvenated and energized for the rest of my trip.

Beyond the seminar, I explored the vibrant sights of Japan, including the art galleries of Naoshima and Yayoi Kusama’s iconic pumpkins. This trip was truly inspirational, and I can’t wait to return to Japan for more adventures and learning.
